Dr. Brooke Wilmsen

Dr Brooke Wilmsen is a Senior Lecturer in Development Studies in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at La Trobe University Australia. She is the Director of the Master of International Development and Convenor of the Major in Sustainability and Development offered in the Bachelor of Arts. Her research interests include forced displacement, involuntary resettlement, climate adaptation, social protection and agrarian change. She predominantly works in China, although she has been involved in research in West Africa, South-East Asia, Australia and most recently, Maldives. Between 2012-2017, Brooke held an ARC DECRA (DE120101037) to study the longitudinal impacts of the Three Gorges Dam on the livelihoods of those displaced. In 2014 she was appointed World Social Science Fellow to the International Social Science Council (ISSC). From 2015-2019 she was a collaborating researcher on the New Directions in Social Policy Project for the United Nations Research Institute for Social Development. In 2018, Brooke was awarded the Vice-Chancellor’s Mid-Career Researcher Award. She is currently a Chief Investigator on an ARC Discovery Project (DP180100519, 2018-2021) examining the restructuring of China's agricultural sector. Brooke is the author of many works critically examining the impacts of displacement that have been published, for example, in Global Environmental Change, World Development, Development and Change, Geoforum, Progress in Human Geography and Asia Pacific Viewpoint. Before joining academia Brooke worked as a consultant for the World Bank, Asian Development Bank, government affiliates and the private sector.
