Introduction

The Institute for Academic Development (IAD) was established in June 2012 to ensure that all academic activities of Villa College (VC) meet national quality standards, are internationally standardized and that the process for the exchange of quality theories and practices are institutionalized. The Institute is situated at QI Campus and provides its services to all the VC campus sites and learning centres.

The work of the Institute is guided by the Academic Senate.

The Institute has been established upon three main principles.

Firstly, overseeing a wide range of academic activities at the College to ensure that the standards set for its quality assurance are met, and ensuring that checks and balances are established to align the academic standards of the College with the Maldives Qualification Authority and affiliated international Quality Assurance bodies, universities, and professional bodies.

Secondly, supporting the implementation of strategic priorities in teaching and learning identified in the VC Strategic Plan, with a focus on current, forward-looking theories and practice.

Thirdly, working closely and collaboratively with deans of faculties and directors of centres and institutes to develop, sustain and promote the identification and sharing of good practice in teaching and learning.

The main responsibilities of the IAD.

Supporting and guiding faculties in making changes to existing programmes or developing new programmes as per policies endorsed by the Academic Senate;

Developing and reviewing existing programmes in collaboration with faculties, accreditation bodies, professional bodies, industry and other relevant stakeholders;

Developing and sustaining the library services of Villa College to meet the requirements of an increasingly sophisticated student body and extensive programme offerings, and ensuring equitability of access to all students throughout the Maldives;

Undertaking the establishment and effective, regular monitoring of the VC Quality Management System and providing feedback and recommendations to all relevant faculties, institutes and centres to ensure that specified quality indicators and standards are met and exceeded;

Collecting, compiling and publishing feedback on the assessment of student learning through appropriate modes to meet the requirements of partner universities;

Liaising and collaborating with international quality assurance bodies to assure the future prospects of our graduates academically and professionally;

Coordinating the Annual Internal Academic Audit of all VC Campuses and Learning Centres;

Conducting professional development activities related to teaching and learning to ensure and maintain the required standards for all lecturers; and

Conducting learning and teaching workshops and seminars to develop and sustain the academic quality of VC teaching staff, and to conduct such activities to meet the specific needs identified through student feedback.
